Thrift Store Redo - Simple Vinyl Transfer (Cricut)

I found this basket with lid, perfect for transporting pies or casseroles to a pot luck, at our local thrift store.  Since I'm more likely to use this in the summer than winter, I wanted to redo the lid.  I may eventually sew a new liner for the basket as well, but for now this one will do.

This is a very quick and simple project!  I painted the lid in Perfect Crust by Valspar - as close as I could get to the smokey beige spray paint that I love, but shouldn't use in the house.  :-)  (It's way too cold to spray paint outside!)

I put the design together using free fonts, and black silhouettes from google images.  This design is almost identical to what I used on the curtains in my laundry room, so it only took a little tweaking...  I cut it from 651 vinyl, which I buy from Amazon.

Once cut and weeded, I transferred it to dollar tree contact paper, which is my preferred transfer paper.

Place the contact paper over the design, and rub over the design.  I use the cricut tool, but the pampered chef pan scraper, or an old credit card, would also work for this.

Then I flip the design upside down, and starting at the corner, pull the backing, diagonally, off the vinyl, which should now be stuck fast to the contact paper.

Flip the contact paper over and place over the surface you are placing the design on.  Again, rub with the tool (or old credit card, or whatever).  Then gently remove the contact paper - the design should stick to the surface, but pull slowly, and again working from a diagonal.
Place the contact paper back on it's original backing - you can reuse this again, and again.  One roll of $1 contact paper will last a very long time!

It takes about 48 hours for the design to be permanent, but it will hold up quite well almost immediately.

These were two earlier thrift store redos -

Fonts With Tails (Glyphs) Cheat Sheet

Glyphs are extra characters in fonts.  For fonts like Samantha (a paid font - there is no free version) you have to use a character map to access the extra swirls. There are a few fonts, such as I Love Glitter, where you can quickly add swirls (nothing as ornate as Samantha, but still pretty!) just by adding a few characters such as * \ [ ] or ().  I call them "easy glyphs". Download all four of these cheat sheets as a pdf file, here.  If that link does not work (too much traffic) Try This One. Links to download each font are found under the photos. How To Use New Fonts In Phonto On Android

There are lots of apps to add fonts to android devices, but I really didn't want to add fonts to my android system.  I have a zillion fonts on my phone already.  What I wanted was to be able to use fonts like I love Glitter in Phonto.   Cliff Notes - Just add them to the fonts folder in the Phonto App.  Phonto has a "how to" for installing fonts on android, but it did not work for me.  This is what worked: My fonts are all backed up in dropbox. That makes this simple - but you could also send the font to your phone through email, and save to your downloads folder.   I just opened dropbox, went to the font, clicked on it, chose export/save to device, and saved to my downloads folder. Then I went to my downloads folder (Use "My Files" - in your app drawer. )  LONG click on the font.  If you just open it, you may get a message saying you do not have an app to pen this file.  You want to select the font, which you do by holding down on ...
