My Favorite Christmas Reads

I keep a list of books of Christmas themed books that I want to read, and as with my full to read list, it grows faster than I can possibly read. (Often my Christmas reading list introduces me to new series, which extends my general to read list... )  Looking back over my goodreads list, I have definitely made a dent over the years, these were some of my favorites.   Letters From Father Christmas by JRR Tolkien https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7331.Letters_from_Father_Christmas This is an amazing book that I own in hardcover, and I really recommend buying a copy.  It is absolutely wonderful. A collection of letters written by JRR Tolkein each year, for his children. " The letters were from Father Christmas.  They told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how the reindeer got loose and scattered presents everywhere; how the accident-prone North Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas’s house; how he broke the Moon into four pieces a

Which Apps & Websites To Use With Cricut -

This is not an app or website, but rather an extension that makes the thubnails of svgs appear as previews, and not just an html icon http://fieldsofhether.blogspot.com/2018/01/how-to-see-thumbnails-of-svg-files.html Want to identify a specific font? Use “what the font”.  Web   Android Apple What the font almost never works for me - but I have seen others get excellent results!  I think it depends on the font. WordMark.it Want to see what your saying will look like in various fonts? Use:r WordMarkIt Web THIS is my favorite site.  It makes it SO much faster to choose a font!! Want to place a watermark over your pics? Use: the app “snap seed”.  Android   Apple Want free fonts? Use: fontzillion or Dafont.com    (Do NOT add an S to Dafont.)  Remember that you do not open fonts in Design Space.  You install them to your computer, then design space can see all of your installed fonts.  Download file, unzip, find your computers font file, add the font.  You may need to restart your computer

Ten Of My Favorite Reads This Fall

This fall, so far, my reading list has been much more diverse than normal.  I have only read a few thrillers & mysteries, and instead have read more memoirs and fiction that reads like memoirs.  It wasn't a conscious decision, but somehow I managed to choose some really, really wonderful books.  And through them I've traveled to India, Australia, Hungary, Tibet, Ireland, and Italy. That sounds so pompous and..  uninviting - but please believe me, I have no patience for dry boring stories...  these books were all books that drew me in and continued to occupy my thoughts when I was unable to be reading.   The Book I Can't Stop Talking About https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18111281-a-long-way-home Ok, so I read this one later than most of you.  It's going to be a movie soon, and it was a book club selection for my local book club, but I missed that month because of our sons wedding...  and then I finally read the book.  Oh my word is it good!  It's the true sto

Pillows & Curtains - Sewing & Cricut

Amusingly, I have used my sewing machine more in the last month, since I got this cricut, then I have in the 6 months prior when I had no cricut consuming my craft time. The Cliff Notes Version: 1. Always use HTV on fabric.  I use Siser EasyWeed HTV, but cricut iron on works fine too.  HTV (heat transfer vinyl) and iron on are the same thing. 2. Envelope Pillow coverers are so, so simple to sew.  Great beginner project.  But you can also buy them on Amazon, or Ikea. 3. Look at Pinterest for pillow designs - there are so many great ideas there!  Don't forget that you can convert your designs to different colors for different holidays..  the truck above was a christmas design, with a tree in the back.   I bought my pillow inserts at Wal-mart for about $4 each, but on Amazon, you can get FOUR, with shipping, for $10!   http://amzn.to/2yMJhdM   I also bought 2 yards of lightweight canvas fabric (right beside the muslin  in the fabric aisle at wal-mart) and that made two 18x18 covers, 2

Making Christmas Ornaments - Cricut Project

The Cliff Notes Version: 1. Glass or plastic makes no difference. 2. Use Polycrylic to be safe.  Others use Mop & Glow because it's cheap, but that may not hold up - Polycrylic is much more likely to last.   3. Ultra fine glitter works best.  White always looks thinner.  Brand does not matter. 4. Make your design about an inch smaller than the ornament, roughly 5. List of free SVGs for ornaments here:  http://fieldsofhether.blogspot.com/2017/11/free-svgs-for-christmas-ornaments.html Step One -  I have 5 kinds of ornaments here.  White opalescent and white glitter, from Michaels.  Glass & plastic "flat" ornaments, also from Michaels.  And small round ornaments, 2 for $1 at the Dollar Tree.  There was no difference at all in how the glitter worked in any of these - it was all pretty easy and went great, in every type I've tried. Glass or plastic made no difference at all.  I like the flat "disc" ornaments better than the round ones, because it's so
