My Favorite Christmas Reads

I keep a list of books of Christmas themed books that I want to read, and as with my full to read list, it grows faster than I can possibly read. (Often my Christmas reading list introduces me to new series, which extends my general to read list... )

Looking back over my goodreads list, I have definitely made a dent over the years, these were some of my favorites.

Letters From Father Christmas by JRR Tolkien
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7331.Letters_from_Father_Christmas
This is an amazing book that I own in hardcover, and I really recommend buying a copy.  It is absolutely wonderful. A collection of letters written by JRR Tolkein each year, for his children. "The letters were from Father Christmas. They told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how the reindeer got loose and scattered presents everywhere; how the accident-prone North Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas’s house; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with the troublesome horde of goblins who lived in the caves beneath the house. Sometimes the Polar Bear would scrawl a note, and sometimes Ilbereth the Elf would write in his elegant flowing script, adding yet more life and humor to the stories. "

A Kidnapped Santa Claus by L. Frank Baum
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2243291.A_Kidnapped_Santa_Claus
A short story, by the author of the Wizard Of Oz.
After failing to tempt him to their own vices, Santa is kidnapped from the Laughing Valley by the five Daemons of the Caves (Daemons of Selfishness, Envy, Hatred, Malice, and Repentance) on Christmas Eve. Can Christmas be saved?

Christmas on Ladybug Farm by Donna Ball
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13141853-christmas-on-ladybug-farm
Ladybug farm is one of my favorite light summer reads - the whole series is a quick read, and there is a Christmas book in the series!

The Twelve Clues Of Christmas by Rhys Bowen
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13542533-the-twelve-clues-of-christmas
Another one of my favorite (mystery)  series, Her Royal Spyness.  Although this is book 6 in the series, it's stand alone, you don't need to read the first 5 to love this book.  Although once you read it, you might want to read the whole series....

The Christmas Mystery by James Patterson
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29605481-the-christmas-mystery
This is a bookshot - less than 100 pages I think...  it's a Detective Luc Moncrief mystery.  (There are a lot of Patterson's books that I do NOT like, this is one series I like a lot.)

The Christmas Wedding by James Patterson
Another Patterson that I liked a lot - this one is not a mystery.

Lost December by Richard Paul Evans
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11110218-lost-december
A great retelling of the story of the Prodigal son
The Christmas Box Trilogy by Richard Paul Evans
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/161361.The_Christmas_Box
Looking for short, sweet, and sappy? This will be a great choice.
The Mistletoe Walk by Richard Paul Evans

Comfort & Joy by Kristin Hannah
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/188201.Comfort_Joy
Kristin Hannah is another of my favorite authors, and while this is far from my favorite book by her, it's a good read.

Hercule Poirot's Christmas by Agatha Christie
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16349.Hercule_Poirot_s_Christmas
The Hercule Poirot series is one of my favorites!
There's also The Adventure Of the Christmas Pudding
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/690146.The_Adventure_of_the_Christmas_Pudding

The Christmas Sonata by Gary Paulson
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2478882.Christmas_Sonata
"A young boy and his mother spend Christmas 1943 with relatives in northern Minnesota while his father is fighting in the war in Europe.  They take a long journey by train to a snowy land of vast frozen lakes, deep and sparkling cold, and the most magical Christmas tree the boy has ever seen.  He knows this will be the last Christmas he will spend with his cousin, who is dying.  The boy's uncle overhears the two cousins say there is no Santa Claus, and in a grand gesture that is nothing short of a Christmas miracle, he restores the children's faith in the spirit of the season."

Duck The Halls by Donna Andrews
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17286833-duck-the-halls A Meg Lanslow mystery - book #6.  If you are looking for a silly mystery, with lots of laughs, try this one.

Rest Ye Merry - a Peter Shandy Mystery by Charlotte McLeod
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/404874.Rest_You_Merry
An extremely light, traditional, Christmas mystery

A Highland Christmas by M.C. Beaton
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18442.A_Highland_Christmas
Another charming (but not TOO sweet) Cozy Mystery.  This was my first introduction to Hamish Macbeth. I keep meaning to read the rest of this series, but I have not yet gotten back to it...

Silent Night by Robert Parker
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7967824-silent-night
A Spenser Novel - this book was unfinished when Parker died, it was finished by his agent.

The Holiday Grind by Cleo Coyle
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6296907-holiday-grind
There are two Christmas books in this series..  this one I liked a lot, the other was just ok.  This is another series I would love to read more of..  mysteries set in a coffee house!

A Christmas To Die For by Marta Perry
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1962305.A_Christmas_to_Die_For
I read this and loved it even before I learned that this is a local author, who I eventually met at our local library!  An Amish mystery.

Fonts With Tails (Glyphs) Cheat Sheet

Glyphs are extra characters in fonts.  For fonts like Samantha (a paid font - there is no free version) you have to use a character map to access the extra swirls. There are a few fonts, such as I Love Glitter, where you can quickly add swirls (nothing as ornate as Samantha, but still pretty!) just by adding a few characters such as * \ [ ] or ().  I call them "easy glyphs". Download all four of these cheat sheets as a pdf file, here.  If that link does not work (too much traffic) Try This One. Links to download each font are found under the photos. What Do I Need To Get Started With A New Cricut?

Which Cricut Should I Buy? I use the Cricut Air 2.  The Maker, which is the model newer than the Air 2, will also cut light wood, and fabric without bonding attached. (the air 2 will cut fabric if you use an iron on bonding material on it)  That was the only real difference I know of, and I don't need to cut light wood, so I went with the Air 2.  I probably would have been fine with the Air.  I think, from what I have heard discussed on facebook groups, the only real difference is the speed  - the Air 2 cuts faster.   Cricut has a comparison of all of their current models here: https://help.cricut.com/help/cricut-explore-difference What Else Do I Need ? 1. Facebook groups and Youtube.  Because the Cricut does not come with ANY instructions.  Nada.  There is one sample project included - a simple card.  And it's amazing to see the machine make it.  But when it's done...  You will need to search out what you want to learn.  Pinterest is also helpful, for ideas.  But you will

Using VLR To Remove HTV - Fixing A Cricut Fail

Cliff Notes: Buy VLR - Amazon is the only place I know of to find it. Apply to the back of the fabric.  Stretch the fabric.  Peel off the htv. Super easy.  Worked great! I love this pillow (second from the left), despite my mistakes in not welding the pumpkins to the truck...    But my husband and I did not get married in 1993.  That's when our twins were born.  We got married in 1991.  Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking either.  :-) VLR is something I had heard mentioned a few times on different facebook groups, so when I placed my last amazon order, I added a can to my order.  It has sat on the shelf ever since.  I was intimidated by it. Today, Design Space was down.  (Still is, actually...)  so it was a good time to try the VLR.  My first challenge was opening it.  Although I knew it couldn't actually be aerosol, when I saw I had to puncture the top (which the label says is plastic, but sounds more like metal when tapped) it made me nervous to use a hammer and nail.
