The "Big" Annual Geocaching Events

There was an interesting thread on a facebook group recently, that started me on a search for some of the bigger events, and some that are not necessarily the biggest, but were of interest for other reasons. If you are  a geocacher planning out your vaction time for next year, below is a list of dates and locations to keep in mind.  :-)

Curious about what to expect at a geocaching event?  I wrote about our experiences at different events here : http://fieldsofhether.blogspot.com/2017/05/geocaching-events.html

I know my list below is nowhere near complete - please let me know what I am missing!

First, an explanation of Event sizes:

Mega Event -
"Mega-Event status must be applied for yearly and is ultimately determined by Geocaching HQ. To be considered for Mega-Event status, Will Attends must surpass 500. It is uncommon for a first-time event to qualify for Mega-Event status. But, once an event has achieved Mega-Event status, organizers may find it easier to attain Mega-Event status for future events.
And why would we care that an event has "Mega" Status?
Events that reach Mega-Event status will receive a sponsorship package from Geocaching HQ that includes exclusive perks.  For example: custom souvenirs, donations of tracking codes for event merchandise, Geocaching banners, a visit from Signal the Frog, and more. Also, because of the positive impact of these gatherings, all Mega-Events are featured in the Geocaching Weekly Newsletter regardless of the distance of the event location from home coordinates."  https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=23&pgid=502
Giga Event -
"A Giga-Event Cache is a geocaching event that is attended by 5000+ people. Giga-Events are the largest of the Event Cache types and feature excellent activities for geocachers attending from all over the world. See the Giga-Event Frequently Asked Questions for more information"

Events Of Interest:

GIFF -  Geocaching International Film Festival
This is not one event, per say, but an an event that will be celebrated with MANY events, all over the world -
"From November 2-6, 2017, thousands of geocachers will take part in a global geocaching movie event. The GIFF 2017 reel will contain an hour of carefully selected finalist films made by geocachers, for geocachers. "

Search your local events for a GIFF screening.  There's a big one in New Jersey, and I believe last year we had one closer to us, in Scranton PA...  but they are held all over the world.

The West Bend Cache Bash is held in Wisconsin in August
This event is unique in that it actually gives away cash.  There's a game card you fill in with stamps, by finding caches, and then you receive tickets to enter to win the cash prizes.
Visit the “Geocaching Capital of the Midwest™”. With over 1,600 caches within a 10-mile radius of the city, you’ll never run out of caches to find!

Fonts With Tails (Glyphs) Cheat Sheet

Glyphs are extra characters in fonts.  For fonts like Samantha (a paid font - there is no free version) you have to use a character map to access the extra swirls. There are a few fonts, such as I Love Glitter, where you can quickly add swirls (nothing as ornate as Samantha, but still pretty!) just by adding a few characters such as * \ [ ] or ().  I call them "easy glyphs". Download all four of these cheat sheets as a pdf file, here.  If that link does not work (too much traffic) Try This One. Links to download each font are found under the photos. What Do I Need To Get Started With A New Cricut?

Which Cricut Should I Buy? I use the Cricut Air 2.  The Maker, which is the model newer than the Air 2, will also cut light wood, and fabric without bonding attached. (the air 2 will cut fabric if you use an iron on bonding material on it)  That was the only real difference I know of, and I don't need to cut light wood, so I went with the Air 2.  I probably would have been fine with the Air.  I think, from what I have heard discussed on facebook groups, the only real difference is the speed  - the Air 2 cuts faster.   Cricut has a comparison of all of their current models here: https://help.cricut.com/help/cricut-explore-difference What Else Do I Need ? 1. Facebook groups and Youtube.  Because the Cricut does not come with ANY instructions.  Nada.  There is one sample project included - a simple card.  And it's amazing to see the machine make it.  But when it's done...  You will need to search out what you want to learn.  Pinterest is also helpful, for ideas.  But you will

Using VLR To Remove HTV - Fixing A Cricut Fail

Cliff Notes: Buy VLR - Amazon is the only place I know of to find it. Apply to the back of the fabric.  Stretch the fabric.  Peel off the htv. Super easy.  Worked great! I love this pillow (second from the left), despite my mistakes in not welding the pumpkins to the truck...    But my husband and I did not get married in 1993.  That's when our twins were born.  We got married in 1991.  Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking either.  :-) VLR is something I had heard mentioned a few times on different facebook groups, so when I placed my last amazon order, I added a can to my order.  It has sat on the shelf ever since.  I was intimidated by it. Today, Design Space was down.  (Still is, actually...)  so it was a good time to try the VLR.  My first challenge was opening it.  Although I knew it couldn't actually be aerosol, when I saw I had to puncture the top (which the label says is plastic, but sounds more like metal when tapped) it made me nervous to use a hammer and nail.
