A Year Of Classic Blocks - Quilt Challenge 2016

January Classic Block - Bow Tie

In January I completed one 8 inch bow tie block for the January challenge, with the goal of ending the year with enough blocks for a sampler quilt, made out of feed sack material.

12 8 inch blocks would make a 96 x 96 quilt, if I do not border the squares.  I will border the squares.  But then I looked at the February block, it is 12 inches.  Ugh!  I don't want to combine 8 inch blocks with 12 inch blocks.  Most of the charts I found for quilt sizes are based on 12 inch blocks, and the January classic block pattern does have measurements for a 12 inch version.. so I think I will do each of the sampler blocks in 12 inches from here on out.

Then I stumbled across this block, by the winner of the January contest:

I love that quilt so much!  It appears to be 7 blocks across and 8 blocks long.  56 blocks.  While I have the fabric out for the sampler blocks each month, I'll make 5 additional bow tie blocks, I think.

So, each month I will want to complete:
Classic Block Of The Month - 12 inch block, 72 blocks total needed = 6 of the block of the month
Bow Tie Quilt - 56 blocks, 8 inches each = 4.6 blocks a month.  I'll plan on 5 and maybe get this sewn together before Christmas.
From a print fabric, cut:
2 squares 4 1/2'' (6 1/2'')
2 squares 2 1/2'' (3 1/2'')
From a contrasting solid fabric, cut:
2 squares 4 1/2'' (6 1/2'')
12 inch block sizes are in ( )

Converted for my purposes - Sampler Quilt
4 print squares 6.5 inches, in 3 different fabrics = 12 6.5inch squares
4 print squares 3.5 inches in 3 different fabrics = 12 3.5 inch squares
12 white squares 6.6 inches each

Bow Tie Quilt - January
(one block is completed, so I will want 4 more)
4 squares 4 1/2'' in 2 different fabrics
4 squares 2 1/2''  in 2 different fabrics
8 squares 4 1/2'' in white

Fonts With Tails (Glyphs) Cheat Sheet

Glyphs are extra characters in fonts.  For fonts like Samantha (a paid font - there is no free version) you have to use a character map to access the extra swirls. There are a few fonts, such as I Love Glitter, where you can quickly add swirls (nothing as ornate as Samantha, but still pretty!) just by adding a few characters such as * \ [ ] or ().  I call them "easy glyphs". Download all four of these cheat sheets as a pdf file, here.  If that link does not work (too much traffic) Try This One. Links to download each font are found under the photos. How To Use New Fonts In Phonto On Android

There are lots of apps to add fonts to android devices, but I really didn't want to add fonts to my android system.  I have a zillion fonts on my phone already.  What I wanted was to be able to use fonts like I love Glitter in Phonto.   Cliff Notes - Just add them to the fonts folder in the Phonto App.  Phonto has a "how to" for installing fonts on android, but it did not work for me.  This is what worked: My fonts are all backed up in dropbox. That makes this simple - but you could also send the font to your phone through email, and save to your downloads folder.   I just opened dropbox, went to the font, clicked on it, chose export/save to device, and saved to my downloads folder. Then I went to my downloads folder (Use "My Files" - in your app drawer. )  LONG click on the font.  If you just open it, you may get a message saying you do not have an app to pen this file.  You want to select the font, which you do by holding down on ...

Geocaching Themed Novels - Part Two

Books To Read When You Can Be Caching - Part Two Last year I compiled a list of geocaching themed fiction. This year when I went to update the post with the additional books that have been published, or that I have since learned about, there were just too many to add to the original post.  You can see last years list here: http://fieldsofhether.blogspot.com/2017/05/geocaching-novels-mysteries-to-read.html I've updated that post with my opinions of the ones I have read - my two favorites from that list were The Advocates Geocache by Teresa Burrell & To Cache A Killer by Karen Nortman I also have a list of Young Adult Geocaching themed novels here: http://fieldsofhether.blogspot.com/2017/05/ya-geocaching-themed-novels.html Hope You Guess My Name by Heather Harlen If plucky heroines had their own secret society, Marina Koneyshna, Stephanie Plum and Bridget Jones would all know the handshake.
