Farmers Almanac Dandelion Jelly

First Batch, April 2017

"Jelly made from dandelions is similar in taste to spring honey. Try making some of your own with this recipe!"

I was skeptical - but it truly does taste like honey!

INGREDIENTS
1 quart dandelion blossoms
2 quarts water
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 package (1 3/4 oz) powdered fruit pectin
5 1/2 cups sugar

INSTRUCTIONS
Pick the dandelion blossoms and rinse thoroughly. Snip stem and green collar.
Boil petals in 2 quarts water for 3 minutes. Cool and strain, pressing petals with fingers to extract juice.
Measure out 3 cups of dandelion liquid. Add lemon juice and powdered fruit pectin. Bring mixture to a boil (large jelly kettles work best for this).
Add sugar, stirring to mix well. Continue stirring and boil mixture for 2 ½ minutes.
Pour into small glasses and cover with paraffin when jelly is cool. Enjoy!

(I processed mine in a water bath for 10 minutes, instead of the paraffin. )

How to Solve The Geocaching August Souvenir Puzzle #1

In August 2016, Geocaching is doing a series of souvenirs based on "missions" premium members receive as puzzles the week before the mission. Non premium members just receive the answer the weekend of the mission. The first puzzle was VERY simple, so simple that many were overthinking it. The bottom of the first plate gives you the hint to solve this - "A six is G" A= 6 letters after A = ABCDEF G C= 2 letters after C = CD E N= 1 letter after N = N O Continuing with the next 3 plates until you have the code to type into the page linked in the email, where the mission was revealed. The answer had to be entered completely in lower case, I think that may have been more confusing than the actual puzzle. :-) On the 3rd plate, for W6 - you go back to the start of the alphabet. Dueling Hot Dog Stands In Upstate New York

While on our ASPGB 2017 road trip, our plans were changed a bit by some minor car trouble. A quick Yelp search turned up these two hot dog stands nearby, and we decided to check them both out. One meal at each place, that we split. We started at Taffy's, which according to Yelp reviews, is THE place for milkshakes. This is a super fun place. All of the seating is outdoors, and almost all of it consists of these great gliders with canopies. But the surprising part was the food. The food was REALLY good. The hotdogs had an a great taste. The milkshake was fantastic (and came in soooooo many flavors - a whole wall of flavors) . We got sweet potato fries with honey, and they were really good too. Spoiler alert - this place was my favorite, and I'd go out of may way to go back here again. Next we drove the very short distance to Ted's. Dr Doolittle's Roadside Cafe & Creamery

The "Lower" Restaurant. There's a second restaurant up the hill, right next to this. I originally saw this place on one of the many roadside PA facebook groups I follow. I thought it would be a fun place to stop for lunch on our way to the ASPGB 2017 - and I was not disappointed. There's normally an amish buggy here, being pulled by either the dinosaur or Sasquatch - but it was missing when we were here. I've seen photos of an alpaca and goats here.. near this barn area. We didn't see them when we stopped, they might have all been inside? There's a lot of road noise if you eat outside, but we sat right at the front of the outdoor seating, not realizing that there was more outside seating behind the walk up counter. Just go back past the party barn, and you can sit between the train cars below, and the back of the lower restaurant. There are train cars everywhere you turn...
